About the author

From Mzansi's screen to Holland's asylum system

Vatiswa Ndara was born in Middelburg in the Eastern Cape in 1970. She started her career in 1994 as a newsreader at Radio Transkei, then went on to present on some of South Africa's best-known stations, including Kaya FM, Metro FM, 5FM and Highveld Stereo. Her screen breakthrough came as Ma'mfundisi in Generations. After that she became one of Mzansi's most loved actresses, with roles in Home Affairs, Tsha Tsha, Society, Muvhango, Igazi and the film Salvation. She won the inaugural SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress and serves as a juror for the International Emmy Awards.

In 2019 she wrote an open letter to South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture about how actors in the industry were being exploited. The letter went viral and sparked a national conversation. She was blacklisted as a result. That reckoning became her first book, Unfiltered: My Unglamorous Odyssey in the World of South African Entertainment, a tell-all memoir about low pay, exploitation and survival behind the glamour of South African television.

Blacklisted at home, with no protection from her own government, she left. She went into self-exile in the Netherlands – where she sought asylum. Unfiltered: Welcome to Holland. Terms and Conditions Apply: My Dutch Asylum Struggle is her account of that journey. In both books Vatiswa refuses to look away. She's witty, sardonic, vulnerable and unfiltered.

The new book

Two Systems. One Soul. No Safe Haven.

When award-winning South African actress Vatiswa Ndara exposed the systemic exploitation of her industry, the backlash was swift: she was blacklisted, silenced and abandoned by her own government. Fleeing a homeland where the legal system protects powerful predators instead of their victims, she sought sanctuary abroad. Her search for survival led straight into a different kind of trap, in a country that is known for its progressive stance on human rights.

In Unfiltered: Welcome to Holland. Terms and Conditions Apply: My Dutch Asylum Struggle, the lens shifts from the corrupt boardrooms of Johannesburg to the cold, clinical and aloof bureaucracy of the Dutch asylum system. What awaits at the border gates and in the detention halls is not a sanctuary but a psychological torture chamber of legal limbo, gloomy living conditions – basically a modern purgatory that strips away dignity in the name of processing paperwork.

Written with wit, sarcasm and vulnerability, this sequel to Unfiltered: My Unglamorous Odyssey in the World of South African Entertainment exposes a devastating global paradox.

The manifesto

More than a memoir of displacement. This book ends with a revolutionary manifesto.

Issuing a direct challenge to the United Nations and the global community, the author sets out three radical pillars to dismantle and redesign the Western asylum complex.

  1. I

    The first pillar

Revealed in the book, by someone who has lived it.

  2. II

    The second pillar

A front-line blueprint, written from inside the system.

  3. III

    The third pillar

A demand for systemic empathy, addressed to the world.

Brilliant, humorous and candid, Unfiltered: Welcome to Holland. Terms and Conditions Apply: My Dutch Asylum Struggle is a demand for systemic empathy: an urgent, front-line blueprint for a world where seeking safety no longer requires you to trade your soul for a permit.
